Tracy Chapman's track Grammy Awards Night

“Fast Car” track again on Top charts in less than 24 hours after Tracy Chapman’s performance at the 66th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday.
After the singer-songwriter, 59, took the stage with Luke Combs on Gala night, her 1988 hit has risen to No. 1 on iTunes in less than a day. The performance came after Combs, 33, explained that the song brought back fond childhood memories.

He said the song was his “favorite song before I even knew what a favorite song was.” The duo sang a rendition of “Fast Car” while playing guitar in a rare appearance from Chapman, who last performed in 2020 and hasn’t toured since 2009. Chapman performed “Fast Car” solo at the 31st annual Grammy Awards in February 1989.

The song’s rendition by Combs, which he debuted in April 2023, swiftly gained popularity among fans and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the country music charts. At the event on Sunday night, his recording of the song was nominated for best country solo performance. At the 2023 Country Music Association Awards, “Fast Car” also took home the single and song of the year awards. Combs said to PEOPLE in December that he was reminded of his father, Chester Combs, by the movie “Fast Car.”

“My dad used to play music for me when I was five years old when we were in his vehicle. ‘Fast Car’ is one of the first songs I recall from his Tracy Chapman cassette tape, which he owned,” the North Carolina native told PEOPLE. “I’ve always been a huge fan of it and think of my dad and our time together when I hear it.”

Chapman expressed her happiness that people are still enjoying the song more than 30 years after it was released in July, acknowledging its comeback in popularity. “I’m grateful to be there, but I hadn’t dreamt finding my track on the top”, she said at the time in an interview with Billboard. She concluded, “I’m glad that ‘Fast Car’ has gained new fans and I’m happy for Luke and his success.”
