Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your journey into music began?

Hi there! Thank you for the feature. My name is Selena Victoria and my journey in music began when I was a young girl. I’ve always had a passion for the arts specifically music. I feel like I’ve been singing since I could talk. I’ve always taken vocal lessons to strengthen my craft, and from there I met some amazingly talented people up to whom I work with today to create my music. Music was something I knew I’ve always wanted to do since I was a kid. It was always my plan A and it will continue to be because I know I can and will become the Successful artist I know I can be. I also love to write. Songs, poetry, short stories but mostly songs. Writing for me and music in general have become such an important way for me to express myself and has been since I started writing. Its been theraputic and a healthy way to express my emotions. Music speaks to my soul in a way no other passion does. Its made me who I am and who I strive to be.

What inspired you to become a singer/songwriter? Was there a moment or experience that sparked it?

What inspired me to become a singer and songwriter was my love, drive and passion for it. There wasn’t a specific reason why I wanted to, I just knew it was my souls calling and I’ve trusted in that ever since. There were multiple moments in my life that further ignited the flame that was my love and passion for music. As a young girl I stood up in front of a thousand people to sing “Ordinary Miracle” by Sarah Mclaughlin for McMaster sick kids – a charity I still hold near and dear to my heart. That was a pivotal moment for me because I knew being on stage was where I felt the most home. I was seven years old and its a memory I’ve held close ever since. There were moments working with other talented artists who have supported me since that made me realize this is something I can do. That I have the talent, the gift and the drive to pursue music. I’ve had many special moments that reminded me why this is what I was meant to do.

Who were your biggest musical influences growing up?

My biggest musical influences growing up were definitely Selena Quintanilla (whom I proudly named after), as well as Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Selena Gomez. These artists hold so much power by just being authentically themselves and standing up for what they believe in. One of many reasons why I looked up to them growing up and still do.

Do you remember the first song you ever wrote or recorded? What was it about?

I surprisingly do remember the first song I ever wrote and recorded. It was called “Take a leap” and the song speaks about chasing your dreams, never giving up and always taking that leap towards what you want out of life. No matter how daunting, scary or anxiety provoking it may be, you have one life so take the leap. The lyrics did in fact read “Take a leap and follow your dreams”. Even as a kid I knew I was never going to give up on music and would continue to follow it and pursue it until I made a name for myself. Still reigns true to this day.

How would you describe your musical style or sound?

The way I would describe my musical style/sound would be selective to what song I write, what my mood is and the vision I have for the song. Normally, I would stick to Pop or Rnb but I’ve also dabbled in country, EDM and I’m always a sucker for a good ballad. However, I lean more towards Pop music as its what I feel my soul resonates with the most.

What’s your creative process like—from writing lyrics to final production?

The creative process of writing a song to recording it is truly the best part sbout being a musical artist. The writing itself most days just pours out of you when there are strong emotions present. I love doing writing sessions with my producers and other artists. The creative juices flow and we bounce idea’s off one another to create this beautiful masterpiece and when we start the recording process, we dabble in various sounds and melodies until we’ve orchestrated a sound we find perfect for that specific song. Its different for every tune but never fails to amaze me every time we create the perfect sound for a song.

Where do you draw inspiration for your songs—personal experiences, current events, or something else?

I would say personal experiences inspire me the most as its the most authentic and is something I want my audience to relate to. When you pour your heart out into a song grasping that raw emotion, it inspires listeners to be able to relate to it and thats the main goal for every song – for it to be able to reach someone out there and let the song resonate with their soul. As artists, its what we do with every song we’ve ever come across. Music awakens an emotion or an experience out of the listener that they know can relate to. However, I’ve also written songs where I step into another persons shoe’s to really grasp what they’re feeling, embody it and follow my inspiration from there.

Do you prefer writing alone or collaborating with other artists/producers?

I love both. I do mostly write my songs on my own, but I’m always open to doing writing sessions or working with other artists to create. One of my songs called “Fortune Teller” I had the pleasure of working with Canadian Pop Sensation and Canadian Idol winner Brian Melo who is super talented and creative. It was an amazing process and the song we created turned out beautiful and did well in many countries including staying in the Top 40 Pop Chart in Switzerland for several weeks. I also worked with super talented producers to bring that song to life.

How do you handle creative blocks or moments when inspiration doesn’t come easily?

I never pressure myself. Inspiration and creativity flows when its meant to. I never try to pressure myself to write or create if its not organically flowing out of me. I let myself sit in the emotions, feel them and if I can’t find the words that day to write a song, I try another day. Music isn’t something that should be forced for you to create. Its a creative process for a reason and is meant to come naturally. I handle those moments with as much grace and compassion I can give myself.

What has been your most memorable performance or career moment so far?

The most memorable career moment to have happened for me thus far definitely has to be my songs charting to the Top 40 Pop Chart on Spotify and on radio stations, as well as being featured numerous times on iHeart Radio for either airplay or being interviewed. Another memorable moment for me was realizing just how real it was becoming when I saw that my fans were creating accounts for me and making amazing fan edits I still save to my phone til this day. They are incredibly talented and are super important to me. They mean the world to me and I am immensely grateful for their endless love and support. Also mentioning having been featured in numerous magazines, press articles and radio stations have been memorable moments for me as well.

How does it feel to connect with fans through your music, both live and online?

It truly feels surreal. Knowing there are real people out there listening to your creations and having that resonate with them is incredibly special to me. I love connecting with my fans and I talk to them daily. I’ve become super close with them and we have many group chats where we just talk and gossip and connect emotionally and spiritually – it means the world knowing I have the opportunity to do that.

Is there a particular song that means the most to you personally?

Out of all my songs that I’ve released thus far, the most personal song to me would have to be “Soldier”. The song is about my struggles with mental health specifically OCD and how I’ve overcome many of those struggles – some that I still deal with to this day. Its not perfect, life is not perfect and we as humans will never be perfect but I believe being real and authentic and truly yourself is more important than putting on a smile and acting like everythings okay. Soldier is important to me because its raw and real, and even though it may be an EDM track that you can bop to, it still holds an important meaning and I’ve always been an advocate for mental health and will continue to be.

What’s been your biggest challenge in the music industry, and how have you overcome it?

My biggest challenge in the industry so far has been struggling with my identity and who I am as an artist. Too many times as artists we often look to other artists and compare ourselves and think we should be doing more when really, its all about us stepping into who we are at our core and staying true to that. When we are authentically ourselves, the right opportunities and the right people will naturally be drawn to us. Our success comes from us being in tune with our soul, our purpose and being who we are. Not looking to other people for validation or comparing ourselves to other artists. Comparison is the thief of joy. I’ve learned that just being my best self will in fact create the Success I desire in divine timing.

When you’re not making music, what are some things you enjoy doing?

There are a variety of things I enjoy doing. From singing to writing to designing fashion. I love spending time with my friends, going on long drives blasting music with the windows down, playing with my dog. I love painting though I’m not quite good at it. I love going on hikes, being in nature and meditating. I have a variety of passions that light me up.

Are there any causes or issues you’re passionate about and use your platform to support?

Yes, OCD specifically. I have always said I want to be a voice for others. Not just through my music but through my experience with severe OCD. In the entertainment industry we hear about depression and anxiety but never about OCD. Although I believe it to be good to bring awareness to any mental health struggle, OCD is one I don’t hear many people talk about. Thats why I want to be that voice for someone out there who struggles the same as me and let them know they are not alone and that you can get help to fight back.

What do you do to stay grounded and take care of your mental and physical well-being?

The way I choose to remain grounded and take care of my well being is through journalling, meditation, stepping out in nature and releasing my emotions creatively – whether that be through music, writing songs or even poetry. Its super important to take care of yourself and put yourself first. There’s no shame in prioritizing yourself and your needs. Its healthy to do so, and I feel more people should be prioritizing themselves and their well being over sacrificing themselves to appease others. You are the only person you’ve got for life, you may as well love and take care of yourself to.

Are there any upcoming songs, albums, or collaborations you’re excited about?

I have a new single called “Two Puzzle Pieces” releasing very soon. Its the sixth song off of my album “Sweet Poison” and the song is about a love so beautiful yet so torturous you can’t decide if you should stay or walk away. At times this love is so ethereal and magical and when its good its SO good, but when its bad, it can be heartwrenching, anxiety inducing and makes you wonder why you stayed in the first place. Its a conflicting love. You love that person but you don’t want to. And you want to stay but its better if you walked away. The entire song is a contradiction in itself. So there are two puzzle pieces but are they necessarily the right fit?

What are your biggest goals as an artist in the next few years?

My biggest goals as an artist over the next few years would definitely be to get more promotion for my music, create more, record more and release more music. As well as going on tour, collab with more artists and producers to create more hit songs. And overall strengthen my identity as an artist. Make a name for myself.

If you could perform anywhere in the world or collaborate with any artist, who would it be?

If I could perform anywhere in the world it would be all over the world truthfully but if I had to narrow it down to certain countries I’d love to travel to and perform I would say pretty much anywhere in Europe, definitely in the US but especially the state of California and in Toronto at the Scotiabank Arena here in Canada.

First concert you ever attended?

Selena Gomez’s first tour. 2011.
