America Ferrer wins

America Ferrera, still celebrating the giant success of Barbie at the 2024 People’s Choice Awards on Sunday. The 39-year-old actress was given the Movie Performance of the Year award by Billie Eilish, with Ferrera making light of the fact that she was merely there to make friends with the “What Was I Made For?” singer.

“The only reason I’m here is to be with Billie Eilish, my best friend. What do you say, Billie?” she amusingly said. “Oh my god, I’m so grateful to everyone who cast their votes for both Barbie and me. I know there are some of you out there, whether you saw Barbie in the theatre once or twenty times. Appreciate you so much for coming with your companions and family, all decked up in your amazing pink,” Ferrera remarked for appreciation.

In addition, Ferrera paused her statement to “thank the incomparable Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie,” who both directed and starred in the movie. “Yes, yes, yes, every blossom to both Greta and Margot for inviting me to represent the entire human race in Barbie Land,” she said.  She expressed her gratitude, “Thank you so much. Hopefully, I made you proud.”

“Being a part of such a daring and inspirational work of art and getting to speak words of truth that so many of us needed to hear aloud feels like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Ferrera remarked in her speech.

She added that the Barbie film “is an invitation to all of us to embrace our full selves as we already are; uniquely, gloriously, and perfectly human.”

Alongside Ferrera, other actors nominated for movie performance of the year were Simu Liu, who co-starred with her in Barbie, Charles Melton, and Natalie Portman from “May December”, Danielle Brooks from “The Color Purple”, Jacob Elordi from “Saltburn”, Melissa McCarthy from “The Little Mermaid”, and Viola Davis from “Air”.

In addition, Ferrera is a nominee for the March Academy Awards’ Best Supporting Actress category for her role as Gloria, one of the few characters in the movie who isn’t a Barbie or a Ken.

Barbie was nominated for eight People’s Choice Awards this year, which is the same amount of nominations it garnered for the Oscars. Additionally, Barbie was nominated for three Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2024.
