Tell us a little bit about how you became a fashion designer?
I became a fashion designer at the age of 9. I started making outfits for my sister with special needs as it was always hard to find clothes that would fit her comfortably and are easy to put on as she is in a wheelchair and finding accessible clothes can be hard. So, I decided to take it upon myself to start making her outfits. At this time, I was a model at NYFW and told myself that one day I will be showcasing my designs on the runway. And that is how it all started.
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a young artist in such competitive industries, and how have you overcome them?
The biggest challenge that I have faced as a young artist in such a competitive industry is not being taken seriously because of my age. People think that because I am young, I know nothing about fashion. How I overcome all the challenges is the motivation and the pleasure in life of doing what people say I cannot do. I do not give up on a dream just because people say I cannot accomplish it. One is never too young for something they really want to do. I always go after my passion.
Who are some of your role models in both the fashion and entertainment industries, and what have you learned from them?
One of my role models in the fashion industry is Lisa Fonssagrives. She was before my time but I admire her for all the amazing talents. Lisa was a model, dancer, fashion designer, photographer and sculptor. What I have learned from her is that there is no limit to what you can be and do. One of my role models in the entertainment industry is Oprah Winfrey. She has taught me the power of hard work and determination.
We know you love theme parks! How do you like to spend your downtime when you’re not designing or acting?
Yes, I am a huge theme park fan. If I am not designing or acting, you will probably see me at Universal Studios or Disneyland [whenever it is feasible]. Other activities I love: swimming, dancing, crocheting, painting, and spending time with my family and my new puppy Echo.
What advice would you give to other young people who aspire to be in fashion or acting but aren’t sure how to start?
The advice that I would give other young people who are inspired to be in fashion or acting is to have confidence. This will be hard work but it will help if to have a plan so you can stay focused and motivated. Surround yourself with positive people, visualize your success. Don’t give up, and just know that there will be setbacks but those are only opportunities to learn. Become a good learner as you will appreciate the experiences of both success and failure. And most of all believe in yourself and keep a positive outlook.
Looking ahead, what are your dreams for the future? Do you have any exciting projects coming up that you can share with us?
Looking ahead, my biggest dream for the future is to showcase my designs at Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks. I’m really excited for the upcoming Los Angeles Fashion Week [LAFW]. I will be showcasing at the iconic landmark Union Station in Los Angeles on October 18.
